A person's quit smoking hypnosis session may differ from a previous session, and will certainly differ under a different hypnotist. This does not disprove that quit smoking hypnosis works. All it means is that it is not known exactly how effective quit smoking hypnosis treatments can be.

Success stories of quit smoking hypnosis treatments may be due to more than just the hypnotherapy. A series of continuing quit smoking hypnosis sessions causes the conscious mind to focus on the problem of smoking. Multiple hypnotherapy sessions cause the patient to take positive, conscious, and repeated action to stop smoking. These positive reinforcements may assist the smoker to quit.

Studies suggest that quit smoking hypnosis therapy is best used as part of a multi-pronged approach to quit smoking. Use it with group support meetings, nicotine patches, and counseling. It is not a 100% effective cure (few things are), but quit smoking hypnosis sessions can increase the efficacy of other simultaneous actions taken to break the nicotine habit.
